I have recently added a new "Add a Link" directory functionality thinking it would help encourage link sharing among other website owners that visit my site. Has anyone else tried this, and is it worth the effort?

I thought about doing this for my non profit website. I hear that link directories and exchanges are great for all sites but mostly for adult sites. It really depends on your target market and the goals you have for your site.

I would appreciate if somebody start link directory for other websites - free of cost. It will help you in getting link-backs and traffic towards your site. You may also start a blog to publish regular updates that will encourage visitors for repeat visits and also your web pages will be indexed fast with quality contents.

yeah definately it would help you in increasing traffic for your site. Pages with high rank helps you lot in boosting up the traffic links for your site.but Only links from relevant sites are going to help you.

Even then a large amount of reciprocal links is going to look unnatural and Google will spot it and you may end up with a penalty.
