    Managed or Un-managed?

When purchasing a VPS or Dedicated Server do you go for the Managed or Un-managed VPS or Dedicated Server?

Personally, I always pick managed as I find it is worth it. I`d rather spend a few extra dollars a month to have a fully managed service rather then have cheap un-managed hosting and when I need help not be able to ask due to it being un-managed hosting.

if you are a tech and can handle basic issues on a server, then go for unmanaged otherwise I prefer managed. ..

In Managed Hosting, the hosting provider takes care of all the Technical issues which occur with the server. He also updates the OS patches, upgrading a application to the latest version to avoiod loop holes. If you have any issues with your server, you just need to contact your hosting provider and his support staff will take care of the issue from there onwards. People prefer to choose a Managed VPS as compared to Unmanaged one, so that they can concentrate on their Business and let the hosting provider manage the server on their behalf.

Not had a VPS as yet but to start with would go with managed. Once I had enough experience would change to unmanaged.

Depends how busy I am, if I have enough time on my hands to deal with problems if they occur then I will go for unmanaged, otherwise I'd go for managed

Managed - If your skills are under Intermediate level , then I suggest you have a managed server that's already has been setup for you and get support. In that case whatever goes wrong on your server you can have an expert by your side and fix your issue in minutes or faster than you can possibly fix it on your own.

Unmanaged - If your skills are above Intermediate level or exceeds over an expert level, then I suggest purchasing a Unmanaged server, the benefits of an unmanaged server is less expenses a month or yearly. Plus you don't need to pay the extra cost to get support from the host provider and don't need noone else to help you with your server. With this option you are on your own and you can technically troubleshoot any problem your server is having on your own.

Managed means different things to different providers. You might be unpleasantly surprised if you don't ask exactly what they manage.
