Forums I am years of experience but not so much as a blogger, I want to know how pinging can be used to help my site?

(I think so, I am only 50 percent sure)
what pinging does is that when ever a new post is published it automatically link your domain in various sites. It is sort of creates links to your post which can get your post indexed by search engine much faster. you do not get any SEO benefit out of it. your new post will be crawled be search engine much more faster then it use to.

If you're using WordPress, take a look at MaxBlogPress to optimize your pings. Some ping services are better than others, and you need to be careful not to over ping.

For a new site, it is definitely worth using Pingomatic, Feedshark or similar sites after every new post. If the site is aged and has a decent number of indexed pages, i am not convinced it makes as much difference.

It can be used to monitor uptime. A service like Pingdom will ping your website at certain times in the day and email you if it's not responding with a "DOWN" alert.
