IPB has been and probably always will be my favorite forum software.

Coming in second is vBulletin, then XenForo and finally, MyBB. Other then those, I don't really like any of the other options, I've never been a fan of SMF or phpBB.

MyBB - it does everything you could possibly need, plus it has good built in spam protection, which saves you from having to install plugins yourself.

I'm between IPB and XenForo - both of them are really, really good. I'm not an expert in the administrator part because I've never been lucky enough to get a license, but as a user, I can say forums that use them look professional and are very user friendly.

I say just go to Open Source CMS Demos & Information - OpenSourceCMS where you can have a play with many different forum scripts as well as having a play with the admin side. I've tried many on there and found most feel like they are still in their infancy with basic options with only phpBB and SMF feeling like mature scripts.

Oh and just to throw a newish one in to the mix - esoTalk - Free, Open-Source Forum Software

My favourite forum software is definitely MyBB. It has great features, and is a great customizable forum software. It has a much better admin area than the others, and just looks nicer on the whole!

I am also a fan of MyBB. In my case it is because of the ability to easily link it with other applications to create a site with an integrated feel. I looked at other forum software and most were harder to link with and this really turned me off. I also like the considerable number of plugins that are available. The only thing that MyBB could really use is a more automated way of performing software upgrades. Something akin to the upgrade approach of Wordpress would be ideal.

I'd have to say Xenforo. It has some extremely awesome styles. It's also very easy to use and has a neat layout. The ACP is a bit different from other softwares but it's fine with me.
