Starting a forum is not hard getting visitors is it takes a lot of hard work to develop a good forum.

Like ezbnc said, it's pretty hard to get a forum off the ground... The most important thing to keep in mind is how unique and original your forum is.

Without originality, your forum will most likely fail.

I agree with the above posters. If you want to drive a lot of visitors to your forum, you'll need to join other forums as well. All you need to build a community are a few dedicated members and it'll grow from there.

If,you decide to start a forum you can purchase traffic packages if you are a newbie and don't know much about seo.

You can very easily make your own forum with a good webhost like for example Host Gator, they usually will give you a Free domain also, then all you need to do is install something like phpBB (free) and you're away laughing.

The BIGGEST and HARDEST thing to do is, like everyone else has said, getting people to actually participate on your forum.

It's not hard, just follow a few tutorials on YouTube and you'll be good to go. Whether it'll be a success or not is a different can of worms.

Creating a forum isn't that hard. Keeping it alive is. You have to advertise, post new contest, perform updates... not as easy as it may seem.

It's hard to get lots of visitors, but if you put the right amount of work in to it, then it will be fine! You also need to use the right forum software to get people to join. Usually free decreases visitors, although not always. You could start with free, and then upgrade.

You need the perfect platform to start a forum. Plan about what topics you would like to include initially. It is also important to safeguard the forum from spamming.
