I now use Disqus on all my Wordpress sites. It has an excellent spam filter and allows readers to use their Facebook, OpenID, etc. log ins to make comments.

I just use akismet and a few plugins that make people solve math to post

Akimset is free Spam blocker WP plugin and they are reliable as what being said by millions akimset fans. I think Akimset developer update their plugin often so they can filter comment come from xrumer or other submission robots

Akimset does not catch all SPAM ... especially if its robust amounts of SPAM you'll still have lots of deleting.

Didn't knew any of these, bookmarked this page, thanks for sharing, I have deleted spams manually and banned ips, helps a bit, or disable the comment/post log.
