    Recovering From A Hack

Has your site ever been hacked and completely defaced? If so, how long did it take you to recover? Happened to me the other day because I forgot to update our software version (Wordpress) took us about a week or so to cover as we lost a weeks worth of data.

We had our .htaccess files changed to redirect to a malware site, took us like 3 hours to recover.

I've never been hacked before, luckily, but if I were, I'd perform a database backup right away. It could take time to recover the data loss, though.

Yes back when I was on vBulletin a hacker got in and defaced our stuff through a plugin exploit we had in our software. It took about 24 hours to fully recover from the attack and remove the exploit in question.

Depending on the attack, recovery can be done pretty fast. When we get a client coming to us after a hacked site, typically in an hour we can get their site up online, secured, and clean. Common way is to re-install files and import DB and then clean and scan the DB.

I had just started a forum and we had just gone over the 200 members mark and while I was on holidays it got hacked and defaced, I didn't hear about this until about three days after it happened and couldn't do anything for about a week because I was relying off my iPod touch in McDonalds wifi XD to be honest we never really recovered, we thought we did but we just died back down again

So how does one get hacked per say? Are you unable to get into your control panal of your host? My sites have never been hacked so I do not know the necessary steps after being hacked.
