What is the difference between an addon domain and a subdomain? In terms of the website URL, aren't they both located directly to the left of the second level domain?

An addon domain is another domain run through the same cpanel with a separate url.Where as a subdomain is just about the same thing only you use the same url. Example forum.yourdomain.com

An add-on domain is just like having a separate web site, however sub-domain utilises the existing domain.

I dont know what an added domain is...but with a subdomain it depends on the site...but it can have a SEO impact.
*An Addon domain is a new and fully functional domain that can be created from your own control panel. The addon domain will seem a totally distinguish domain from primary domain.
*A sub domain utilises the existing main domain name. It does not have its own domain name. A sub domain points to a folder in your public_html directory of your main-domain.
anuradha,
If you are using cPanel an Addon Domain would be a new domain name setup on the same cPanel account. WHM/cPanel will set the document root for the primary domain to /home/USER/public_html, where USER is the FTP user you picked when you setup the primary domain. The Addon domain will be created in the same cPanel account and the document root for the Addon domain will be /home/USER/public_html/domain2.tld by default but can be changed to /home/USER/ANYTHING_YOU_WISH.
Subdomains with cPanel are items like something.primarydomain.tld or blog.primarydomain.tld. By default the document root for the subdomain will be /home/USER/public_html/SUBDOMAIN but can be changed to anything in the format of /home/USER/ANYTHING_YOU_WISH.
So if you had a primary domain of domain1.com with the user one, the Addon domain with domain2.com, and the subdomain of one.domain1.com you would have the the following by default for document roots:
- domain1.com /home/one/public_html
- domain2.com /home/one/public_html/domain2.com
- one.domain1.com /home/one/public_html/one

Sub-domain is a part of the main domain.
Eg: If abc.com is the main domain
then x.abc.com is a sub-domain which is a part of the main domain.
Addon domain is a independent domain
Eg: If abc.com is the main domain
xyz.com is a addon domain which is separate from the main domain.
